A 15 year old Saskatoon male will be appearing in Provincial Court charged with a number of offences following a criminal pursuit early this morning.
At approximately midnight, December 8, 2011, an officer on patrol noticed a vehicle driving erratically in the area of 21st Street and Avenue P South. He began following the vehicle and witnessed further erratic behaviour by the motorist. A low speed criminal pursuit ensued and other officers responded in an attempt to block the vehicle at 22nd Street and Whitney Avenue. The vehicle then rammed a police car and continued to evade officers. The pursuit continued to the Idylwyld and 33rd Street area where speeds reached approximately 80 kms/hr before it was called off. Another officer in the area noticed the vehicle abandoned and three suspects fleeing the scene on foot at 33rd Street and Avenue P. The SPS Canine Team successfully tracked one suspect to a backyard in the 1400 block of Falkner Crescent where he was arrested. It was found that the suspect vehicle had been reported stolen earlier.
The 15 year old male is facing charges of Possession of Stolen Property, Possession of a Weapon and Breach of Probation.
The Saskatoon Police Service was also involved in two other criminal pursuits overnight, with vehicles reported to be stolen. Both of those pursuits were immediately called off.
Theft of motor vehicles continue to be a concern for the SPS. The majority of thefts are committed by a small number of individuals and are considered crimes of opportunity. Residents can avoid becoming victims of motor vehicle thefts by ensuring they turn their vehicles off when unattended, take their keys with them, and lock doors and roll up windows.
